Basic Issues

The recent terrorist attacks have heightened everyone’s appreciation of the need for better security and the ability to track movement of those suspected of terrorism, particularly visitors to the U.S.  There is also an increasing awareness by the Federal Government and its agencies of the vulnerability of Internet-connected systems.

The need for convenient, secure and cost effective authentication has been apparent for e-commerce for some time.  This need has now expanded into our everyday reality.  However, this requires that we face new and serious issues as well as identify platforms that can deliver the convenience and security on a far wider basis than ever before.

The workshop will deal with issues including:

• ID card configurations
• Actual ID card implementations
• Identifying deployable tools for the job: what can be deployed in six months?
• Can an ID card be made flexible in terms of authentication and anonymity hierarchies?
• Identifying the hard problems: What about Privacy and Forensics?  What vulnerabilities are difficult to address with current technology?
